Tell your child how much you enjoy reading with him or her. Talk about "story time" as the favorite part of your day. Snuggle up close as you read so your child will associate reading with a warm, loving feeling.

The Alabama football program is asking Tuscaloosa and the surrounding communities to join them in helping the people of South Louisiana as the area deals with devastating flooding.

The Druid City Garden project is hosting build days at three local schools that are new to the Gardens to Schools program – where DCGP uses school gardens as teaching tools to engage students with hands-on learning.

Community members are invited to participate in garden build days at Crestmont Elementary and The Alberta School of Performing Arts on Saturday, August 20th, from 8 to 11 a.m., or at Verner Elementary on Sunday, August 28th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

James Bailey started studying martial arts seriously in 1978. Back then, it was mostly adults learning the fighting arts.

“When it started, 100% of the students were adults and the program was modeled after the Korean military,” Bailey said. “It was much more aggressive and there were no pads early on.”

It is soon time to head back to school. In the whirl of excitement, stores offer back to school sales for clothes and supplies offered in preparation for that first day of school. On any given day, Dr. Katy Drain can be found busily caring for animals at her newly-opened Capstone Veterinary Hospital. Drain, who has worked as a veterinarian in Tuscaloosa for the past 15 years, is passionate about the pets she treats, and their owners.

“What drives me is my love for animals, the nurturing, love and compassion that I have for them,” Drain said. “Second is the science, and third is their owners and the relationship I have with them. I love that owners trust me.”

A new and improved Harmon Park is open in Tuscaloosa – after being destroyed in the April 2011 tornado.

“Harmon Field and Rosedale Park are a gateway to our city and the eastern terminus of the City Walk, which simulates the path of the tornado,” said Becky Booker, public relations and marketing manager for the Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority. “The centerpiece of this playground is a custom 21-inch tall, hand-sculpted, hand-painted treehouse, the tallest piece ever designed by the manufacturer and possibly the tallest in the southeast.”

The University of Alabama is implementing a clear bag policy for all Crimson Tide football games at Bryant-Denny Stadium, beginning this fall.

The new policy is in line with what other SEC members, including Auburn, South Carolina, Florida, Texas A&M and LSU, are putting into place this year. The NFL and other professional organizations have similar policies.

In a statement, UA said the decision to institute a clear bag policy for football games is “in the interest of the continued safety of all of our guests, players and stadium personnel.”
