Amelia Gayle Gorgas Focus of This Month’s Sundown Lecture Series from TCPS

06 Jul 2015

The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society’s Sundown Lecture Series continues on Thursday, July 9, with the lecture “Amelia Gayle Gorgas 1826-1913.”

The presentation will be led by Dr. Sarah Wiggins. Amelia Gorgas was the first female librarian at the University of Alabama, and the library bears her name. This Greensboro native is noted for increasing the UA library’s collection dramatically during her tenure. Gorgas also served for many years as post-master.

The lecture will be held at the Jemison Van de Graaff Mansion on Greensboro Avenue. Light refreshments will be served from 5:15-5:45 p.m., and the presentation will begin at 5:45 p.m. Lectures typically last about 45 minutes.

For Tuscaloosa Preservation Society members, the lecture is free. For everyone else, it’s only $5. Stop by on your way home from work, to learn more about our area’s rich history!

For more information, and to check the schedule for this season’s Sundown Lecture Series, call Lucy Murphy, Events Coordinator for the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society at (205) 758-2238.
