Mayor's Minute: August 2016

Mayor's Minute: August 2016 City of Tuscaloosa

After the April 27, 2011, tornado, our goal was to build back stronger, safer and smarter. The Gateway Innovation and Discovery Center exceeds these three facets. In fact, I was impressed at every step of this building and development process, and was blown away with the final product.

With high tech meeting rooms, a children’s discovery area and a captivating interactive touch screen wall, The Gateway is designed to curate information and present it in the most compelling, accessible ways possible.

We want to empower our community by making information as accessible and portable as possible. We want our students to be able to thrive in a competitive landscape, and tech literacy is a prerequisite for that, from pre-k through college. We want our workforce to gain marketable skills. We want seniors and under-served citizens to have access to technology that helps them remain connected and informed. The Gateway is purpose built to strengthen our technological capabilities and our economy.

The Gateway combines information with accessibility, solar power with lightning connectors, high-tech 3-D printers with dry erase walls, touch screens with tornado safe rooms and a 16-foot interactive touchscreen wall with handheld tablets to create a space that is truly one-of-kind.

I invite you to go out and explore The Gateway. You will be amazed. And while you’re there, use the free Wi-Fi, tablets and laptops to send me an email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or a tweet at @WalterMaddox.
