Following the ceremony, the first 100 shoppers received golden tickets – each contained ALDI gift certificates of various amounts. They were able to sign up for a Produce for a Year sweepstakes as well. Customers were also able to tour the new store, sampling ALDI-exclusive brand products, including its SimplyNature line, which is free of artificial colors, flavors or enhancers. The grocery chain also offers a gluten-free product line. ALDI’s exclusive brands are typically priced up to 50 percent less than traditional supermarkets.
“We look forward to introducing Tuscaloosa shoppers to ALDI, where they can find the majority of their average weekly shopping list from our exclusive brand products – including fresh meats, fruits, vegetables and bakery items – for up to 50 percent less,” said Troy Marshall, Mt. Juliet division vice president for ALDI. “We are committed to bringing ALDI customers the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices in a simple and easy-to-navigate shopping environment.”
The Tuscaloosa store features high ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally-friendly building materials – such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs. ALDI also has an unusual cart “rental” system to eliminate overhead costs: Shoppers insert a quarter to release a car, and receive the quarter back when they return it. Customers are also encouraged to bring their own shopping bags.
